A New Zealand man who fled with his girlfriend after receiving millions of dollars in a banking error is described by friends as an unsuccessful businessman whose main aim was to get rich quick.

An international search is underway for Leo Gao, a Korean national, and his girlfriend Cara Young, a New Zealander, who disappeared two weeks ago after finding their bank account had mistakenly been credited with $6.1 million.

Chevi Lambert, owner of the neighbouring business Andy’s Cellar told The Times that Gao “dreamt of getting rich.”

“He talked to me about his dreams and ventures,” Ms Lambert said. “His one big dream was to make money. He bought a fish and chip shop next door to the garage and wanted to make it into a Chinese fish and chip shop. But he didn’t do anything about it.”

It is understood the couple, who ran a failing service station in Rotorua, on North Island, had applied to Westpac Bank for a loan of $61,000 but were given 100 times that amount instead.

The young couple, who are in their mid-twenties, told friends they were going on vacation but instead left the country.

Their car was found abandoned at Auckland airport and the police believe they have fled to China. Interpol and New Zealand police are focussing their search on Beijing and on Hong Kong.

  • ABC: Jackson is ‘Candidate 5′

ABC News has a law enforcement source telling them that Jesse Jackson, Jr. is “Senate Candidate Five,” the one who was — according to Blagojevich — willing to supply campaign cash in exchange for the Senate seat.

(This, incidentally, doesn’t strike me as all that unusual in politics, or as obviously criminal as other things in the complaint — though the crudeness with which Blagojevich discussed it was.)

    ABC reports:

Jackson Jr. said "I don't know" when asked if he was Candidate #5, but said he was told "I am not a target of this investigation."

Jackson Jr. said he agreed to talk with federal investigators "as quickly as possible" after he consults with a lawyer.

The Congressman, a son of the famed civil rights leader, denied that anyone had been authorized to make payments or promises to the Governor on his behalf.

"It is impossible for someone on my behalf to have a conversation that would suggest any type of quid pro quo or any payments or offers," Jackson Jr. told ABC News. "An impossiblity to an absolute certainty."

  • SUMTER, S.C. – An ex-convict who thought he was being robbed gunned down a 12-year-old trick-or-treater, spraying nearly 30 rounds with an assault rifle from inside his home after hearing a knock on the door, police said Saturday.

The family attended a Halloween celebration in downtown Sumter, 45 miles east of Columbia, then stopped at Patrick’s house because the porch light was on, police said. Another sibling was with them, but wasn’t hurt. (more…)

  • DELTONA, Fla. - An angry Deltona father whacked his teenage daughter’s boyfriend with a metal pipe after finding the boy naked in his daughter’s room. Authorities say the father, 45, didn’t even know his daughter had a boyfriend or that the youngster had been sneaking into the home for more than a year.

When he heard noises coming from his daughter’s bedroom Thursday morning and saw a stranger standing naked on the girl’s bed, he swung a metal pipe. He then chased the teen out the front door and called police.

The boy was taken to the hospital where doctors closed a head wound with staples.

The father was charged with aggravated battery on a child and bonded out on $10,000.

  • So at what point during an 82-0 loss in a women’s ice hockey game do you turn to your buddy and say, “C’mon, finish your popcorn and let’s beat the traffic?”

Because Slovakia led Bulgaria 31-0 after the first period (.pdf) of their 2010 Winter Olympics women’s ice hockey qualifier over the weekend in the Latvian town of Liepaja. After two periods, they led 55-0. If you’re Bulgarian and still in the arena during the third period, chances are you’re either one of the players or someone who also refuses to leave the worst movie ever made because you paid “good money” for the ticket.

The 82-0 defeat capped what may have been the most pathetic tournament appearance in international hockey history.

GENEVA (AFP) - Want to get rid of your goldfish? Swiss owners who have been flushing them down the toilet — still alive — must now find other methods since strict, new animal protection laws went into effect Monday.

Instead, a fish must be first knocked out and then killed before its body can be disposed of, the law stipulates.

The new legislation spells out in exhaustive detail how all domestic animals are to be treated, whether they be pets, farm animals or destined for scientific experiments. (more…)

  • Why it’s so hard to swat a fly

us_fly.jpgCHICAGO (Reuters) - The brains of flies are wired to avoid the swatter, U.S. researchers said on Thursday.

At the mere hint of a threat, the insects adjust their preflight stance to flee in the opposite direction, ensuring a clean getaway, they said in a finding that helps explain why flies so easily evade swipes from their human foes.

“These movements are made very rapidly, within about 200 milliseconds, but within that time the animal determines where the threat is coming from and activates an appropriate set of movements to position its legs and wings,” Michael Dickinson of the California Institute of Technology said in a statement.
