The Dodgers’ 10-run first-inning Saturday night was all fun and games until things were quickly put into perspective.

Home-plate umpire Kerwin Danley was hit in the facemask by a Brad Penny 96-mph fastball to open the fourth inning and the impact sent him immediately to the ground on his back.

Danley, whose wife was in attendance, was tended to by Dodgers trainers during a lengthy delay. A major league umpire for 11 seasons, Danley remained on his back behind home plate able to move his arms, but he did not move his lower extremities.

An ambulance entered from center field before Danley was strapped to a stretcher and fitted with a neck brace. The Los Angeles native, who graduated from Dorsey High School and currently lives in Arizona, waved to the crowd before being placed into the ambulance.

The Dodgers announced that Danley was coherent, breathing and conscious while being treated by the Dodgers’ medical staff. He briefly lost consciousness after the ambulance arrived in the home-plate area. (more…)
